Job Description

SUMMARY

Provide test support to Westlake customers, production, environmental and other departments.  Responsible for the development of new test methods and the improvement of existing test methods.  Ensure that test methods comply with ASTM, governmental and industry standards. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

May include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Using knowledge of scientific theory, work with Technology Laboratory Chemists and Engineers to develop new laboratory test methods and implement improvements to existing methods.  This includes conducting designed experiments and applying statistical techniques to determine test method capabilities and limitations, creating laboratory standards, developing calibration techniques, establishing test method parameter and analytical procedures, and conducting training for analysts on new methods.
  • Independently carry out laboratory investigations in accordance with project objectives.  Carefully control experimental conditions and use practical knowledge of scientific principles and laboratory techniques to achieve results.
  • Contribute to the process of problem solving and utilize logic when faced with project barriers and presents solution proposals to overcome project barriers.
  • Tabulate data and perform moderately complicated mathematical calculations or apply statistical analysis to data in order to obtain results in the proper format.  Prepare charts and graphs as required.  Present data in presentation form to appropriate personnel.
  • Participate, as requested, in departmental training programs for new hires and refresher training programs for incumbent technicians, including development of training materials and delivery of training.
  • Perform testing on an as needed basis.
  • Revise department procedures on an as needed basis.
  • Perform macro-level programming on laboratory test equipment.
  • Serve as technical resource for customer visits where lab test methods and work processes are reviewed.
  • Follow all Occupational Safety & Health Act (OSHA) requirements and other safety procedures outlined in the TEX Authorized Safe Practice Manual and TEX Emergency Plan.  Active participant in work group safety meetings.
  • Follow good housekeeping practices, including correcting or reporting to supervision immediately any unsafe conditions or practices.
  • Use all safety equipment as designated, including but not limited to safety glasses, safety hats, and hearing protection.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Follow Procedures in according with ISO requirements.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of Westlake Quality Policy and Department Quality Objective per ISO requirements.
  • Communicate effectively in order to perform the essential functions of the job.  Issue written monthly reports to document project progress and more frequent project updates as needed.
  • Follow Company policies and programs including all HSE policies and procedures.
  • Attend industry conferences, seminars and training on an as needed basis.
  • Complete additional tasks as assigned by management.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry or similar technical field, or equivalent laboratory experience.
  • Five+ years’ experience in a laboratory.
  • Ability to operate FTIR, LC, GPC, DSC, GC, and other related equipment.
  • Knowledge of polyethylene design parameters and how they relate to the physical or analytical testing.
  • Proficiency in verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in the use of statistical tools, software, and computers.
