SUMMARY

This role is a fully functioning Chemist involved in project work and routine and non-routine sample testing during and post production.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

May include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Researches, analyzes, synthesizes, and experiments on substances, for such purposes as product and process development and application, quantitative and qualitative analysis, statistical analysis, process troubleshooting and improvement of analytical methodologies.
  • Carries out moderately complex procedures and experiments according to protocol and standard operating procedures in accordance with all regulatory requirements with minimal guidance. May utilize new instrumentation and equipment, and develop procedures and methods for solution of technical problems. 
  • Is a self-starter and makes valuable contributions to the department and takes the initiative to recommend and implement improvement opportunities.
  • Safely handles regulated materials, potential biohazard matrices, and toxic chemicals according to company procedures and policies as required by the studies performed.
  • Performs complex data evaluations, reviews the work of others, and writes complex technical reports and standard operating procedures and can make detailed complex technical presentations.
  • Develops analytical standards and specifications for processes, facilities, products, and testing.
  • May provide support for applications and perform maintenance on analytical instruments in some locations.
  • Is proficient in the assigned area, can troubleshoot technical problems, develop action plans of resolution and has developed a basic understanding of other relevant disciplines. Is also proficient in working routine and non-routine quality control jobs when required to cover staffing vacancies.
  • Provides direction, training and coaching to Lab Technicians, Chemists or others in the department.
  • Communicates routinely with supervision, operations, shipping, supply chain and peers to develop rapport and good working relationships and provides technical information verbally and in writing in a timely manner.
  • Actively participates in team efforts and works effectively with a variety of different personalities and work groups while successfully accomplishing assigned goals and initiatives.
  • Successfully leads small to moderate sized project and group efforts and provides motivation, expertise and judgement. Eagerly volunteers for new work assignments and challenges.
  • Is adept at problem solving and utilizes logic and creative thinking when faced with difficult situations to understand the big picture and act accordingly.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry strongly preferred. Related technical science field degree (Biology, statistics, environmental, etc.) with related work experience will be considered.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of work experience preferred.
  • Usually will spend 3 years minimum at this level.
  • Successful candidates must satisfy background screening, including motor vehicle record screening, drug testing & pre-employment physical requirements before starting work.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate as normally based in an office.  Some of the work may be required in the operating units which can require usage of required PPE including safety glasses, hearing protection, etc.  May also result in exposure to outside elements and may require usage of stairs and elevators.  Travel including air travel or auto travel may occasionally be required.
