Job Description

SUMMARY

The Superintendent - Maintenance leads a team of mechanical, electrical, and controls technicians to ensure safe and efficient operation of production equipment.  This person is responsible for the overall safety, environmental, quality, productivity, and cost management of the maintenance effort. Key areas of responsibility include: KPI monitoring & management; management & adherence to environmental & occupational health and safety programs; maintenance cost analysis & improvement plans; multi-year major maintenance & capital planning; overall maintenance and reliability improvement plans.

This person will interface between operations, engineering, environmental / health & safety, and contract maintenance groups.  The superintendent also works to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

May include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Support and drive all applicable Westlake Environmental, Health & Safety Programs / Policies:
    • Accident Prevention Program
    • Hot Work Policy
    • Mechanical Integrity Program
    • Monthly Safety Inspection / Audits
    • Ensure completion of all Safety related Work Orders.
    • Control of Hazardous Energy
    • Management of Cranes, Hoists & Slings
    • Confined Space Policy
    • Certified Fall Protection Competent person.
    • Machine Guarding Policy
  • Ensure all maintenance activities are conducted in a safe and environmentally sound manner while adhering to all company policies and procedures.
  • Oversees and directs all maintenance related functions to ensure plant operations can maintain safety compliance.
  • Managing safety incidents to ensure protocol is followed and maintained.
  • Responsible for promoting teamwork, resolving conflict and building strong work relationships as well as providing training and guidance for staff.
  • Participate in and promote continuous improvement.
  • Inspect, monitor, and control the quality of workmanship and completed tasks to ensure it meets company standards.
  • Implement and maintain plant preventive maintenance program.
  • Responsible for keeping maintenance personnel abreast of advancing technology in diagnostic techniques, repair procedures and preventative measures to assure optimum performance at minimum cost.
  • Provide leadership and coaching where necessary regarding all planning, scheduling and execution of routine, maintenance work within the facility.
  • Provide leadership and support to drive development of detailed asset strategies for improved asset reliability.
  • Ensure Root Cause Failure Analysis and/or troubleshooting procedures to solve repetitive equipment problems is being utilized.
  • Utilize problem solving techniques to resolve complex manufacturing problems.
  • Work with cross functional teams to correct manufacturing issues.
  • Drive improved productivity, quality of work, and cost control in area of responsibility.
  • Monthly material and labor cost forecasting.
  • Utilizes manufacturing Lean principles to minimize operating costs by efficiently maintaining spare part levels.
  • Annual budgeting process, forecasting, and cost reporting functions.
  • Participate and utilize various improvement or benchmarking projects as required.
  • Support Maintenance Management with cost analysis & improvement plans.
  • Develop and maintain five (5) year maintenance and capital improvement plans.
  • Assist with onboarding, training, and mentoring of new maintenance personnel on various maintenance systems.
  • Implementation of contracting strategy cost control measures.
  • Communicate and review Maintenance performance metrics and KPI's with Maintenance and Operational personnel on a regular basis to improve understanding and to drive improved productivity and efficiencies.
  • Responsible for maintenance department housekeeping ensuring a safe work environment.
  • Responsible for the appraisals of performance of all Maintenance personnel.
  • Ensure adherence to maintenance standards and procedures.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors of Science (BS) in Industrial Maintenance or Engineering, or relevant work experience; and at least 10 years Operations and/or Maintenance experience in manufacturing, with 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Detailed knowledge of relevant regulations such as OSHA, EPA, and ANSI.
  • Experience in MS Office applications.
  • Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) program.
  • Knowledge of maintenance, planning and scheduling requirements.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong leadership and training abilities.
  • Must be detail oriented. 
  • Operate well in a team environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position has a transitioning work environment.  Office/computer, manufacturing plant and outdoor environments are normal.  The noise level in the plant environment is usually moderate.  Half of the time is spent in an office, and half on the production floor.  Some of the work may require usage of required PPE including safety glasses, hearing protection, steel toe shoes, fall protection, hard hats, etc.
