SUMMARY

Works with the Safety and Process Automation engineers to implement all areas of the S84 code for safety critical instrumentation while also maintaining/upgrading the safety, control and PLC systems in the unit of assignment. Priority will be placed on safety systems to ascertain and maintain proper function and documentation of testing.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

May include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Create and maintain proof testing procedures current for all safety critical instrumentation within assigned area.

  • Assist S&PA engineers with developing capital improvement plan and implementing any safety or process system upgrades or major modification projects.

  • Train I/C support group on safety and control systems as necessary.

  • Audit all proof-testing procedures performed within assigned unit.

  • Manage Defeat Authorizations and provide reporting on a weekly and monthly basis.

  • Review and modify proof test frequencies based on historical data and design changes.

  • Perform safety integrity analysis and validation of safety instrumented functions to ensure compliance with defined Safety Integrity Levels.

  • Participate in Process Hazard Analysis and LOPA meetings to provide input for hazard mitigation via safety and basic process control systems.

  • Perform PHA evaluations for determination and documentation of safety critical alarms, controllers and safety functions.

  • Perform alarm management reviews with operations group on a regular basis.

  • Provide engineering service request (ESR) support for safety and automation systems changes within assigned unit.

  • Responsible for ensuring that backups are performed for all safety system components.

  • Performs security checks on all safety and control systems at regular intervals to insure access is limited.

  • Perform safety system programming and revisions as necessary in support of assigned process unit.

  • Maintain good working knowledge of safety instrumented system standards (IEC 61511, NFPA).

  • Maintain System, Network, and Loop drawings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A current, valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card is required.

  • A.S. Technical degree in related field or equivalent plant experience, preferably in the chemical industry.

  • Should possess a minimum of eight (8) years’ experience in industrial control or safety systems programming.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word & Excel), AutoCAD/LT, and SAP operations.

  • Safety system technician certification per ISA or other accredited institution preferred.

  • Successful candidates must satisfy background screening, including motor vehicle record screening, drug testing & pre-employment physical requirements before starting work.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate as normally based in an office.  Some of the work may be required in the operating units which can require usage of required PPE including safety glasses, hearing protection, etc.  May also result in exposure to outside elements and may require usage of stairs and elevators.
